Server through ICS

Hey guys, is there any way to operate the demise server on a computer connected to the internet by ICS? Do you need to use a routing program to send all requests for the demise server port to the other computer? Is there such a thing as a routing program?

That depends on where the server is. If it's on the computer that is actually connected to the internet, then no, it should work normally. However, if it's not, you'll need some proxy software to route requests back to it.
ICS just lets the other machines make connections through the connected machine. Anyone in the "outside world" can only connect to the gateway machine.
Hope that helped.

Well I'm not shure about ICS but with my router as long as I open port 26000 you can connect to a demise server by using my outside IP address as the connect address then to connect from inside the network you put the computers name in as the bound address and type that into the game. I'm just not shure if you can open different ports when useing ICS cause I've never used it.

Thanks for your help guys. I found a solution using a program i found on CNET's Download.com called portview that lets me route incoming traffic on the port I use for the demise server on the computer connected to the internet to be sent to the computer on my network where i wanted the demise server to be run.

Hi! I have DSL and run 4 PCs using ICS. I found that even on the PC connected to the outside world, my servers would not run. I found info. at MS describing how to set up an *.inf file to allow them to run. It works fine, but its too long to post. If you'd like a copy, email me at decklin@pacbell.net and I'll attach it.

AFAIK the ICS (stands for Internet Conection Sharing) started to appear in Windows 98 (SE?) donīt know for sure... It is surely present in the WinME and i donīt know about the W2k...

ok , just wan't to mention that i run as a server for my local lan on win2k pro , and i don't have to setup anything to run server or this machine or the others , it works perfectly on all computers , and not only demise other game servers too , no port forwarding or anything, i have tryed ICS on 98se and winME and everything had tweaked ICQ , mirc dcc'ing , just about anythin i tryed failed , so win2k rules

Interesting ... ICS acts similar to a firewall, so port translations are required. Although I have set up fine for Demise servers, I cant run Baldur's Gate MP or any audio stuff (e.g. Messenger ) without explicitly opening those ports for direct translation. However my server is relatively secure. If you've time I really recommend you log on to http://www.grc.com and use the utilities there to check your networks security - you may find your system is "wide open".

yupp my system is wide open ,i have never been hacked , ppl are free to come and go as they wan't . the funny thing is that i use Irc alot and in kinda large channels where Dos trojans virus spreading packeting etc etc , is quite frequent, lots of my friend in irc uses tight firewalls and programs to monitor the trafic on theyr ports , but then again ask one of them how often they have had an atempt for an hack, they will probably say Never as an answer (unless some of theyr friends have been fooling around) ,but then again i'm not running a corporate server , just a local lan at my home ,i have no enemies (or is it that i have to many powerful friend ?).

win2k pro has built in firewall for the ICS , not that i use it , i just know its there :Þ , my point is that a standar home user running a Demise server for himself and friend , the system won't need the "heavy" security u mention , but then again thats just MHO

If your computer is currently connected to the Internet, the most likely cause for LeakTest's inability to connect is an aggressive and properly working firewall. If so, it is preventing LeakTest from connecting to our machine's FTP port number 21.
That's GREAT news! . . .
and i don't even have a firewall .. hmm

Due you perhaps run a Cable or DSL Modem through a broadband router? Most of those come with a firewall enabled.
