How to move NT to new hard disk ??

I have some new hardware (new CPU, memory, motherboard, case and harddisk) for my Demise server. I wonder what options I have to move NT4 from the old system (which uses a few SCSI disks) to the new system (just an IDE disk). Is it possible to copy NT and Demise from the old disks to the new one ?? And will this NT work on the different motherboard (Intel TX instead of Via MVP3) ?? I could always re-install NT, but just moving the files would be much quicker.

I would re-install. With your current setup, you will have to edit the boot file to get it to work with the IDE disks. Scsi entries are different than IDE entries. Also the drivers will be different for the controller cards for the drives. It might not recognize them. In this case, it will probably be faster to re-install rather than try moving files around.

Never ever move an installed copy of NT to a system that is not identical to the original. Period. You can get it to work, but it is very likely that you will waste hours of time trying to track down phantom errors and weird crashes. This operating system was not designed for this kind of abuse Not that 95 or 98 are much better about this sort of thing.

Actually, 95 is much better about this. You can take a 95 harddrive and pop it in a new machine with a minimum of trouble. The same definitely cannot be said about NT/2000. NT is very sensitive to hardware changes. Even swapping out an old video card for a new one can cause a few minor problems unless you uninstall the drivers for the old card first. Where NT is concerned, always reinstall.
