Ok, one more time... I have 1.00r3.1 installed. Exactly what do I need to download from AE's website? Full Data files or main executable, or both? With or without installer?

Both the 353.exe and the .dll and dont start the game in between them. The installer version is the one that some ppl have had big problems with. BUT!!!!! are you shure you have the r3.1 patch in ???

My own experience was without installer. Copy both executable and data. BUT I think its important to slot yourself appropriately in this sequence: Transferring Chars from demo:, (copy DEMISEcharacters.DED elsewhere, load original full version CD but DO NOT PLAY! Copy DEMISEcharacters.DED back to appropriate directory then PLAY. (Gets the encryption sorted out), Upgrading first patch: (1.00r3.1 US Retail), Run executable exactly as told., Then PLAY! (At least go into the dungeon and back out again), Second patches - copy files as instructed., Then PLAY! NOTE - IMO do NOT run with auto backup (default) checked ... make frequent deliberate MANUAL backups. Thats my version of the safest route ... any comments welcomed!!!

Ok gota ask whats wrong with auto backup have you determened that it is the cause of character file bloat?

I don't know if it is artof character file bloat, but try this start the game with autobackup enabled, enter the dungeon then check the amount of memory. Now turn off autobackup, run Demise, enter dungeon and check amount of memory. I have found, at least on my 98 system, that I loose quite a few megs that are not returned to the game. I always turn off autobackup. It makes the game run smoother.

Yes, but there's one key problem with that: with Autobackup on, your characters are saved every 1-5 minutes (not sure on exact time length). That way, if there is a crash, you lose less than if you run without it. Better to use a little extra memory and only risk losing 5 minutes than save a little memory and risk losing hours. Just a thought.

Your characters are saved every few minutes whether autobackup is on or not. I now this because of more than one time I have crashed and came back nto the dungeon in the area I left out of. I prefer to do a manual backup when I exit.

I do manual backups as well, usually about once every two hours. I was under the impression that autobackup is what saved your characters. Guess I was wrong. What in-game good is it, then?

I was under the impression that automatic backup was merely a way of ensuring that you do not forget to create a manual back-up with the additional difference being that manual back-up occurs on exiting the game and automatic back-up occurs when loading the game).

Correct Garth. During beta auto-backup ran upon exiting the game. Somtime around the time DA released the demo he changed it to run when you started instead of exiting.

My fuzzy memory tells me the reason I stopped using Autobackup was something to do with crashes which caused problematic game exits and then the autobackup 'saved' corrupt files. I really wish I'd written that stuff down - it may not be a problem following the patches but I'm sticking with manual backups for now
