char file size

I thought the char file blowing bug was fixed with the r3.1 patch, but as I checked my char file today it was around 5.1 MB and 6 weeks ago it was only around 2 MB. Needless to say that I didn't added or removed chars, it just turns bigger by playing. Has anyone a suggestion how to fix this?

NO and the game slows down as it gets bigger too

I don't know how to fix it, but I do have a good theory to the cause. My character file has never grown.... and I play almost exclusively SP. I have one MP character which I have put about 10 hrs into... maybe. From what I gather, most of the people with bloat problems play MP quite a bit. I think there is a problem saving server data in the character files.... in fact, it would be interesting to see if some played a MP character on ONLY 1 server and noted file sizes... then restarted with the same character but played on as many servers as possible.... Are there any SP only people with bloating?

Mine is up to 10 megs now. Deleted all charactors that I didn't use thinking it would shrink, but it hasn't. Oh Well, someday I will have to start over from the beginning again. Just another excuse to play more.

You are talking about the DEMISECharacters.DED file right ? Mine is 932kb, is that big or small ? 10Mb don't sound much to me...

I would say 1MB is ok, haven't a real problem with my filesize (6MB now) but I wonder where the limit will be, its rising and rising. On slower Comps loading and especially the encoding at saving will be much slower with bigger char files.

467k is my files size. I have 6 SP characters ranging from a level 280/86 Ninja/Warlock to a level 45 Artisan and one MP character that is level 11 and has only ever played on my offline server and at Spinnerville.

I actually agree with Kevin. I started playing and have been playing SP for a while with my character file at 32kb but, by just starting an MP character I have never lvl'd b4 it jumped to 329kb.

Actually went and checked in windows explorer. 10,323kb and apparantly growing. Hope I can kill the KJ before it becomes a real problem, then I won't feel so bad about starting over.

I have a couple of "real characters" and a couple of "bank characters" all in SP and total character file size is just 27K after about 300 hours of play so I also agree with Kevin that it seems to be an MP problem (however, I did not run any characters pre-3.1 so that could also be an explanation).

Humm, i just checked my character data today... DemiseCharacter.DED... Before I started to play MP i had a 392kb file, now i have a 2.7Mb file, so it is definitely a problem with MP. My guess is that the game saves some information (like the time you have logged or something else completely useless most of time)... Now, i will drop MP for some time (who knows, perhaps 2 months) and i will try to see if my 2.7Mb file will grow larger... ((((
Also, i know that there were some people who could *try* to reduce your character file size. If there is anybody out there that knows more or less what should be done i would appreciate if they entered in contact with me at cintra@mailcity.com

char file bloat is definitely an MP problem.
i haven't played MP in many months, nor posted on these boards )
my mp char file was up to around 10 or 11 megs when i quit. since i've been playing SP with a fresh install, my char file hasn't gotten over 100k yet, last i checked it was 47k. That's with 11 SP chars, the 'oldest one' having about 300 hours of dungeon time.

I have never played MP and my file is 1Mb.. So it's not MP that's the problem.. But this is Demise so it could be MP and a few other things... Windows = bugs Demise = bugs Windows + Demise = ?

I was just wondering couldn't this have something to do with how many servers you play on? I mean in multiplayer much more information must be saved in the character file due to the fact that you can change server from time to time. Eg on one server you've managed to complete the Gherrick quest to kill a Shen'gal - this information must be placed in the charfile and not just in the servers quest file (or whatever this file is called) so that you when you enter another server haven't completed the same quest on this server too. This was just one example of (probably) many types of information that nessecarily must be saved in a multiplayers character file. In SP all this info doesn't have to be places in the char file since you'll only have use of it one place. I don't know how well this was expressed but I hope somebody understood it
