Map errors

I'm getting a lot of null-magic squares (the lightning bolt) appearing on my map, and some of my annotations are appearing as lightning bolts now. When I go to the spot where they appear on the map, there is an axe sticking out of the ground! Any ideas how to fix without deleting the @#$$%^^^ map yet again?

I think someone said something about the anotations file but wait till some one else can confirm it.

No solution but more observations and a product suggestion. The extinguish square icon plauges me as well. What I have noticed is that they appear (probably after playing for some time anf getting a bit of memory corruption) where items have been found on the ground. I have occacionally seen them clear up, and re-appear at later stages. I have even tried Map-Area spell to see if it would clean up the map. Many times instead of a fait mist that indicates an extinguish square, the spot is marked by an image (ie axe) of one of the last items I found. I think there is a bug in the items placement and/or retreival routines. A common theme but I'm sure if it's always true, but it appears to be when items are found in areas like anti-magic, stud or quicksand. What would be good is if the map-area spell or just re-visiting an square coud clean up the map, even if the bug can't be fixed quickly.

I'm also getting false extinguish squares on my map. I've noticed that this often happens when i enter the dungeon with different party leader than before. i.e normally my giant is leader but when i enter with my dwarf as leader there is 2 wrong ex. squares for example at level 4. They cannot be removed by moving into them and trying to change leader while in dungeon...

I've found the map errors occur after a crash, or game exit that didnt exit properly for whatever reason. After applying the last Patch which helped game stability issues I wasn't crashing so often, and the map seemed to be staying stable with only a few errors. I just recently started MP again after a long break, and when my ISP dumped me while in the dungeon, my map corrupted again with a lot more of those pink lightning bolt icons...ARRRGGHH... To get rid of the "measles" of Annotation icons - you can delete the Annotations.DED file in your Demise directory - this has worked for me when annotations went bananas...it wipes all annotations, and I found afterwards that any more annotations just started the whole *measles* thing over again, so I dont annotate at all now. Deleting the MazeItems.ded file, (I think thats the right file) resets all the Items on dungeon floors, which I had to do once when a Quest item I knew had been handed in by a previous SP character, and hence should have been reset in its laired position, hadn't shown up where it should have been. So I deleted the MazeItem.ded file and this not only reset the dungeon items, but also helped remove a lot (tho' not all) of the pink lightening bolt icons. Hope this info helps

Thanks for the info guys. I tried deleting the files mentioned, but Demise had a fit on startup and said that I had manually removed files (well, duh!) and would replace them from backup, so I am back to square one again. Any techies out there got a solution for me?
